Chemistry of Materials in Perfumery – Level 2 (Advanced Formulation & International Regulations)

Course Overview:

At this level, we transition from the basics to the engineering of complex fragrance formulations and strict international compliance. You will dive deep into the science of solubilisation, preservation systems, and modern eco-friendly solvents, alongside learning how to calculate safety thresholds and allergens to license your products globally.

Prerequisites: Level 1 completion (or prior fundamental knowledge of IFRA and MSDS).

Course Modules:
 1. The Science of Solubilisation & Advanced Blending (Solubilisers & Emulsifiers): A detailed study of Polysorbate 20 and Polysorbate 80, exploring the differences in binding oils into water.

Utilising PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oilas an effective solubiliser and emollient with a smooth skin feel.

 2. The Next Generation of Eco-Friendly Solvents: Studying Augeo Clean Multi and its professional applications in reed diffusers and room sprays.

 3. Preservation Science & pH Balancing:
   * Utilising Phenoxyethanol and PlantaServe E to protect water-based products from mould and bacterial growth.
   * Employing  Triethanolamine (TEA) to balance pH levels, ensuring formulation stability and skin safety.

 4. Advanced International Regulations & The 12 IFRA Categories:
  - Mandatory Disclosure Laws: Identifying and declaring allergens on outer packaging.
  - The 12 IFRA Categories: Applying mathematical equations to calculate the maximum allowable percentages for each product type (fine fragrances, candles, cosmetics, etc.).

Complex Aromatic Compounds:
- Understanding esters, aldehydes, and ketones in perfumery
- The role of fixatives and modifiers in scent longevity
- Case studies of complex natural and synthetic materials

Advanced Fragrance Classification:
- Deep dive into niche fragrance families and subcategories
- Understanding fragrance layering and harmonization
- Analysis of iconic fragrances and their structural components

Formulation Techniques:
- Techniques for creating balanced perfume compositions
- Understanding dilution, evaporation rates, and scent longevity
- Hands-on exercises: crafting complex blends with varying concentrations

Innovations in Fragrance Technology:
- Overview of synthetic vs. natural ingredients: pros and cons
- Exploration of new technologies in fragrance extraction and synthesis
- Sustainable practices in modern perfumery

  • Capstone Project:
- Participants will design a unique fragrance concept from inception to formulation.
- Presentation of the project, including a detailed description of the scent profile, target audience, and marketing strategy.

Why will you join our course?

  • Explore advanced  chemistry concepts relevant to perfume formulation.
  • Understand the interactions between different aromatic compounds and their impact on scent.
  • Learn about the latest innovations in fragrance ingredients and technology.
  • Develop skills to create complex fragrance formulations.

Target Audience:

  • Individuals who have completed Level 1 or have basic knowledge of perfumery.
  • Aspiring perfumers, fragrance enthusiasts, or professionals in related fields seeking to deepen their expertise.
What Will the Student Learn?
 * How to formulate perfectly stable, crystal-clear water-based fragrance products that do not separate, using the correct solubilisers.
 * How to chemically protect aqueous products from microbial contamination by building a precise, skin-safe preservation system.
 * How to work with modern, sustainable solvents like Augeo to produce high-performance reed diffusers and room mists with optimal evaporation rates.
 * How to calculate safety limits, identify allergens, and classify your products within the 12 IFRA categories, making them fully ready for local and international legal licensing and retail.
